A Fractional Variable Order Model of COVID-19 Pandemic

2020 has witnessed a rapidly spread pandemic COVID-19 which is one of the worst in the history of mankind. Scientists believe that COVID-19 spreads mainly from a person to another. Recent researches consider bats as a vector for COVID-19. This paper suggests a variable fractional order model for COVID-19 to figure out how bats and hosts interact, and how the seafood market affect people. The proposed model assumes that infection cannot be recovered. The basic reproduction number R0 for real data on reported cases in Wuhan China was computed. Disease-free equilibrium points and proposed model

Incorporation of perlite and recycled aggregates for internal concrete curing

Adequate curing of concrete is a fundamental step in concrete manufacturing to meet performance and durability requirements. Internal curing is a technique that can provide water to concrete for extended durations towards thorough hydration of the cement and reduced cracking. This work addresses potential use of two substitutes of ordinary aggregates for internal curing. Perlite as well as recycled concrete aggregates were incorporated at three dosages each to replace the coarse aggregates. Sets of concrete mixtures were prepared as fully cured in three different techniques: water, applying a

The valuation premium of the common stocks of Islamic financial institutions

The study examines the valuation premiums paid by investors for the common stocks of Islamic financial institutions in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The UAE stock markets, during the period 2001-2005, were dominated by financial institutions which counted for 58% of all listed stocks. The study employs the price to book and the price to sales valuation multiples. Valuation by price to book value is more relevant and accurate for financial firms due to the high liquidity of their assets. It is found that there is a strong clientele preference for Islamic stocks despite the modest financial

Developing Role Model of PV Powered Battery Swapping Stations for e-scooters in Urban Regions

Electric vehicles (EVs) can only provide lower carbon emissions than conventional, internal combustion-powered vehicles if they are charged using green energy. They also have the drawback of long charging times to 'refuel' them. To combat these two problems, a solar-powered battery charging and swapping station was developed using centered-human design and systems engineering. The design focuses on electric two-wheeled vehicles (e-scooters) due to the easier handling of their light and low-capacity batteries compared to electric cars. These stations are easy to maintain and manage and can be

Product Mix Optimization Scenarios: A Case Study for Decision Support Using Linear Programming Approach

Determining the optimum product mix under the theory of constraints (TOC) has been considered by many researchers. In most cases, researches consider one scenario with one important aspect which is maximizing the profit by giving the best solution. This paper solves a product mix problem faced by a birds' food production facility. The problem is modeled and solved using two linear programing models. Several scenarios are presented for the same problem considering two important aspects, namely, resources' utilization and productivity. Data visualization is extensively used in this paper to

Biological souring and mitigation strategies in oil reservoirs

Biological souring is one of the major problems facing the oil and gas sector as a result of biogenic sulfide generation in the reservoirs. Sulfidogenic microorganism and particularly sulfate-reducing bacteria are the main generator of the biogenic sulfide. In consequence, souring has a plethora of economic and environmental problems. It has a negative impact on the petroleum industry, where the generated sulfide lowers air quality and causes adverse health problems due to its toxicity and carcinogenicity. Furthermore, it affects the whole industry by reducing the product quality and enhancing

Optimizing Automotive Electronic Throttle Control with a Modified Grey Wolf Algorithm

Electronic Throttle Control (ETC) systems have become increasingly popular in the automotive industry due to their ability to improve fuel efficiency and vehicle performance. However, designing effective control strategies for these systems is challenging due to the non-linearities and external load affecting the throttle gate angle. This paper proposes a novel control approach for ETC systems using a modified Grey Wolf optimization algorithm combined with a fractional-order PID controller. The proposed approach is designed to handle the tuning of the controller's five parameters in the

Influence of high-strain-rate compression and subsequent heat treatment on (TiNbZr)89(AlTa)11 refractory high-entropy alloys: Dynamic-mechanical behavior and microstructural changes

This study explored the dynamic-mechanical behavior of a novel low-density (TiNbZr)89(AlTa)11 refractory high-entropy alloy (RHEA) across strain rates ranging from 1.0 × 103 to 3.5 × 103 s−1. A significant increase in the yield and ultimate compressive strengths with rising strain rates up to 3.0 × 103 s−1 was observed and attributed to enhanced dislocation activities and stress-induced microstructural transformations. The formation of the B2 phase and Zr5Al3 precipitates was found to be crucial in bolstering the alloy strength at high strain rates. Beyond strain rates of 3.0 × 103 s−1, a
